PennWest California’s four-year commercial Commercial Mmusic Technology degree fuses traditional approaches to the study music performance, music history, and theory with modern-day applications, including popular music analysis, live sound reinforcement, audio engineering and entrepreneurship.
Working under the guidance of experienced professors, you will gain proficiency in vocal performance or the instrument of your choice, you’ll learn to read, write and analyze musical scores, and you’ll acquire copious amounts of hands-on experience in audio engineering and digital music production. After all is said and done, you’ll have the skills and knowledge that you need to become a successful artist and entrepreneur in today’s competitive commercial music industry.

PennWest California is one of only a few recognized Academic Avid Learning Partners in the state of Pennsylvania that prepares and tests students for professional certifications of Avid software products, including Pro Tools®, one of the music industry’s standards for music production. Students are then given an opportunity to earn a professional certification in Pro Tools®, giving our degree seekers an employment advantage both regionally and nationally.
All CMT majors have access to individual and group practice rooms, as well as professional recording hardware, software and facilities. Our music technology lab features 21, state-of-the art Apple computers loaded with Avid’s® Pro Tools®, Sibelius®, Waves® plug-ins as well as other virtual instrument software bundles. Our tracking room is equipped with an Apple Pro computer, Pro Tools HD hardware, a 24-channel “split” analog mixing console and a patch bay system full of preamps and signal processors.
We regularly invite local and national industry experts to our upper-level seminar courses (Music & Recording Technology V and The Music Industry: HFA) to share their experiences, tell you how they’ve made their mark in the industry, and offer advice on how you can do the same.

Through coursework, students learn how to use the modern tools of music-making to expand their technical knowledge and develop their artistic voice. All CMT majors graduate as competent performers on their instrument, with a portfolio of their own studio recordings, 240 hours of hands-on practicum experience, and an entrepreneurial mindset.
There are also plenty of opportunities for internships that will set you apart from the competition. Our CMT majors have secured internships in recording studios, on stages, in radio stations and in the theaters of some of the nation’s hottest music cities, including Nashville, Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, and New York City.

Whether you’re a musician with an enterprising spirit or an entrepreneur with a passion for music, a degree in music business can prepare you for success in the U.S. music industry, which annually generates more than $19 billion in revenue.
Built on PennWest California’s innovative B.S. in Commercial Music Technology degree, the interdisciplinary music business concentration merges business and music courses in a program that also draws on fields such as digital media technology, theater, management and marketing.
In addition to formal music training, you’ll gain hands-on skills in recording technology plus expertise in areas such as business law, business management, sales and marketing, and business law.
