What is the Purpose?
Building Bridges is a collaborative initiative between the Office of Community, Opportunity, Responsibility and Engagement and the broader PennWest community. The program creates intentional spaces for peer-led dialogues that promote self-reflection, mutual understanding, and authentic connection. By engaging students, faculty, and staff in structured conversations, Building Bridges strengthens communication skills, broadens perspectives, and fosters a shared sense of belonging — ultimately supporting academic success, professional growth, and a more inclusive campus culture.
Beyond the campus, Building Bridges partners with K–12 schools and community organizations to nurture empathy, collaboration, and thoughtful communication. These sessions help build trust, enhance organizational culture, and support inclusive, engaged learning environments, while also contributing to the creation of enriching, student-centered classrooms.
How Does the Program Work?
Each semester, trained students and staff facilitators visit classrooms, student clubs, and organizational meetings across PennWest University to lead structured discussions grounded in personal experiences and a range of worldviews. These peer-led sessions create space for open dialogue, reflection, and connection within both academic and social settings.
Launched nearly 30 years ago on the Clarion campus, the intergroup dialogue model has shown measurable success in fostering inclusive learning and working environments. Today, Building Bridges expands that legacy across all PennWest campuses and into local communities—offering forums where individuals can engage, learn, and grow as their authentic selves, strengthening the fabric of both the university and the broader region.
What Can You Expect?
Who Are the Facilitators?
Building Bridges facilitators are students and staff selected through an interview process and trained to lead meaningful, respectful dialogue. They receive ongoing development in active listening, non-defensive communication, creating supportive environments, and navigating challenging conversations.
Facilitators are deeply committed to the program’s mission. Many are motivated by a desire to foster connection, understanding, and positive change within the PennWest community. They dedicate their time, talent, and energy to building a program that not only impacts their own growth but also enriches the lives of others.
