Asa student, you'll have the opportunity to learn from faculty who are passionate about teaching, research and scholarship. Most have terminal degrees in their field as well as experience in middle-school classrooms. They will become your mentors as you learn how to create dynamic lessons and develop strong classroom management skills.
This four-year undergraduate degree program is rooted in the standards of the Association of Middle Level Education (AMLE) and is specifically designed to prepare you for a top career teaching middle school students. You will receive plenty of field experiences in local classrooms and have opportunities for job placement support from faculty, alumni and PennWest’s Career and Professional Development Center.

If you’re passionate about developing literacy in your students and empowering them to become life-long readers, this is the concentration for you. You’ll learn how to help students develop strong reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. You’ll gain an understanding of how to instill a love for literature in your students and help them explore literary writing in various genres, including poetry, drama, fiction, non-fiction, screenwriting and digital storytelling. This program utilizes an integrated approach that includes a wide variety of literature, as advocated by the International Reading Association.

Make an incalculable impact on the next generation by teaching middle school mathematics. A bachelor's degree in education with Pennsylvania grades 4-8 mathematics certification will give you in-depth teacher training, including an entire semester of student teaching, as well as specialization in teaching mathematical concepts. You’ll gain experience teaching proven techniques in introductory courses in algebra, geometry, data analysis and probability, rations and proportions, expressions and equations.

The knowledge of science is more important than ever before, with the jobs of the future relying on a thorough knowledge of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) topics. This is your opportunity to introduce children in grades 4-8 to exciting concepts in biology, geology, astronomy and other sciences! With this concentration, you’ll gain the specialized science education knowledge, skills and disposition you need to be an effective middle school science teacher. Teach students the importance of data-driven inquiry. Delve into important topics such as ecology and evolution and cell and molecular biology and showcase the value of STEM education.

Open students’ eyes to the world of geography, history, government and current events. You’ll learn the skills you need to make history come alive as you introduce students to the roles of responsible citizens in today’s world. Challenge them to compare the past with the present. Discuss controversial topics that make the news. You’ll be supported by faculty who have extensive experience in this field. You’ll also have the opportunity to utilize proven teaching techniques in both general middle school and specialize social studies teaching.
According to the U.S. Department of Education, there is a teacher shortage in many U.S. states, which means it's a great time to earn a degree in education. Salaries vary by school districts and geographic location, but the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the median salary for middle school teachers in the U.S. in 2021 was $61,320per year. PennWest's middle level education bachelor's degree opens the door to many rewarding opportunities.
