Students in grades four through eight can be as different as night and day. They’re at various stages of physical, mental and emotional developmental, and yes, they are easily distracted. They are also full of wonder and excitement. With a B.S.Ed. degree from PennWest, you will be prepared to excel as you teach these students.

This program is backed by PennWest’s legacy in teacher education. Our philosophy of excellence and commitment to developing future teachers will help you understand the professional, social and ethical responsibilities associated with being an educator.

Asa student, you'll have the opportunity to learn from faculty who are passionate about teaching, research and scholarship. Most have terminal degrees in their field as well as experience in middle-school classrooms. They will become your mentors as you learn how to create dynamic lessons and develop strong classroom management skills.

This four-year undergraduate degree program is rooted in the standards of the Association of Middle Level Education (AMLE) and is specifically designed to prepare you for a top career teaching middle school students. You will receive plenty of field experiences in local classrooms and have opportunities for job placement support from faculty, alumni and PennWest’s Career and Professional Development Center.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, there is a teacher shortage in many U.S. states, which means it's a great time to earn a degree in education. Program Outcomes

  1. Candidates will develop, implement, assess and modify curriculum and lessons that integrate research-based pedagogy and are developmentally appropriate to their content area, the PA PreK-12Academic Standards, and concentration level: Middle school.
  2. Candidates will plan, adapt and implement developmentally, culturally and linguistically appropriate evidence-based instructional practices and strategies that integrate appropriate and effective classroom management in various educational settings.
  3. Candidates will communicate deep content knowledge as they plan and implement lessons and instructional practices that use active student engagement and formal and/or informal assessment to measure student responsiveness to instruction.
  4. Candidates will develop professional dispositions with respect to students, parents and families, and will demonstrate integrity, ethical behavior and professional conduct as stated in Pennsylvania’s Code of Professional Practice & Conduct for Educators.
  5. Candidates will identify, administer and interpret multiple assessments (formative, summative, benchmark, behavioral, diagnostic, cognitive, and/or affective and psychomotor) that are developmentally appropriate and aligned with content area standards and learning objectives to inform planning and instruction for groups and individual students.
