EDINBORO – For the 13th consecutive year, Edinboro University earned national recognition for providing veterans and their families with a first-rate post-secondary education.

This month, Edinboro University earned silver distinction in the annual Military Friendly Schools list for 2022-2023 after earning top measurements in engaging prospective military students, educating military students and providing the students with meaningful employment.

Edinboro was recognized for the achievements of the Veterans Success Center and the campus ROTC cadre. Approximately 185 military-related students attend Edinboro, including veterans, spouses and dependents – many of whom use Veterans Affairs benefits.

“Our office works diligently to provide veterans and the military-related population with a smooth and successful transition to the university, in addition to providing supports throughout their academic journeys,” said Dr. John Christman, coordinator of Edinboro’s Veterans Success Center. “While we are grateful to receive such recognition, we remain cognizant of the ever-changing needs of the students and how we can improve to meet these needs.”

Institutions earning the Military Friendly Schools Top Awards were evaluated using public data sources and responses from a proprietary survey. Over 1,800 schools participated in the 2022-2023 survey – 665 schools earning Gold, Silver or Bronze.

Methodology, criteria and weightings were determined by Viqtory with input from the Military Friendly Advisory Council of independent leaders in higher education. Final ratings were determined by combining the institution's survey responses and government/agency public data sources within a logic-based scoring assessment.

Military Friendly analysts measure each institution’s ability to meet and exceed satisfactory thresholds in retention, graduation, job placement, repayment, persistence and loan-default rates for student-veterans.

Edinboro’s Veterans Success Center manages resources for veterans, current service members and their dependents, ensuring that students receive not only the university’s high-quality and affordable education but also individualized support services.

Edinboro’s ROTC cadre – the Fighting Scots battalion – allows potential Second Lieutenants to earn their undergraduate or graduate degrees from Edinboro and simultaneously develop skills for the U.S. Army.

Students enrolled in the program receive instruction in the fundamentals of leadership with emphasis on self-discipline, integrity, confidence and responsibility. This instruction is given in the classroom, on practical field training exercises, and during several summer courses including Army ROTC Basic Course, Army ROTC Advanced Course and Cadet Leaders Course.

“Award-level schools have gone beyond the standard, showing true commitment and dedication in their efforts,” said Kayla Lopez, director of Military Partnerships for Military Friendly. “This benchmark promotes positive educational outcomes and support services that better the educational landscape and provide opportunity for the military community.”

Founded in 2001 and endorsed by the U.S. Department of Defense, Military Friendly (VIQTORY) is a service-disabled, veteran-owned small business that connects the military community to civilian employment, educational and entrepreneurial opportunities.
