Breanna Elder’s life was committed to love.

As a special education teacher at Tracy Elementary School in Erie, Pennsylvania, she loved her students.

As the daughter of Tim and Darla Elder and sister of Caleb, she loved her family.

As a student-athlete at Edinboro, she loved playing softball.

As a loyal chicken owner – yes, chickens – she loved the animals from hatch to adulthood.

To honor her memory, her family and friends have established the “Bre Humble Fund” to provide scholarships for General McLane School District students to pursue elementary and special education at PennWest Edinboro.

Edinboro’s softball team and the Ghering Health and Wellness Center will host the first event to raise money for this scholarship fund on Saturday, Sept. 23. Runners and walkers are invited to participate in the Inaugural Chicken Run 5K, which will also featured a one-mile run and a kids fun run and walk.

Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. with the race to start at 10:30 a.m. – rain or shine. Runners are encouraged to register at BreannaElder.com.

The race will start and finish at the Doug Watts Cross Country Course.

The race winners will be announced prior to Edinboro’s home football game against the California Vulcans. All first-place winners of the 5K will receive free tickets to the football game.

PennWest’s Education Department will provide fun activities and crafts for the children in the Kids Fun Zone. Children will enjoy visits by the Chick-fil-A cow mascot, “Doodles,” the Fighting Scots’ beloved MacCato, and the Chicken Run’s very own “Bestie.”

Local businesses have donated items for a basket raffle, and all attendees can buy a $10 sheet of tickets to win a basket.

Major sponsors for the event include PennWest University, Leader Graphics, Rebich Investments, and the Lincoln Daniel Bufalino Foundation. The Erie Runners Club will provide precision timing.
