From Marching Band Memories to Community Leaders

Jason and Katie SpangenbergJason and Katie’s story began in the unlikeliest of places—a high school marching band—and has evolved into a partnership deeply rooted in tradition, community, and service. Jason vividly remembers a moment during a school trip to Disney World when he first noticed a blond freshman flute player who would later become his lifelong companion. That brief encounter sparked a connection that has grown steadily over more than 15 years, filled with shared school events, meaningful traditions, and a commitment to serving others.

Katie’s ties to Edinboro run deep. With a family legacy that includes a grandfather who once taught on campus and a mother who now works there, it was only natural for her to embrace the university spirit. Immersing herself fully in campus life, Katie joined the marching band and engaged in various student activities. At the same time, Jason began his professional journey with the Borough of Edinboro shortly before graduating in 2014, steadily progressing to his current role as Borough Manager—a position through which he contributes to the community’s well-being.

More recently, Katie transformed her entrepreneurial vision into reality by opening the B and Bear Café, a welcoming local hub that reflects the warmth and community values of Edinboro. Their experiences as students and community leaders continue to shape their outlook and inspire those around them. They encourage current students to embrace campus life wholeheartedly: “Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and get involved.” Jason adds, “If you don’t look around, you’re going to miss out on so much.” Their enduring partnership and dedication to community service embody the Penn West spirit, inspiring future generations to cherish tradition, community, and lifelong learning.
