PennWest student explores career paths on the front lines of conservation
Adriana Bernard is turning coursework into practical experience through environmental permitting, water sampling and restoration projects

As a senior majoring in environmental science: sustainability and climate science at PennWest Edinboro, Adriana Bernard is turning classroom knowledge into real-world experience through a scientific and technical internship with the Northwest Regional Office of the PA Department of Environmental Protection Waterways and Wetlands program in Meadville, Pennsylvania.
A native of Conneaut, Pennsylvania, and graduate of Conneaut Area Senior High School, Bernard is spending her internship immersed in the work of environmental protection and conservation throughout the region.
Her responsibilities include conducting site visits, reviewing environmental permits, collecting water samples at Presque Isle and assisting with wetland restoration projects.
“My internship has been very fulfilling and aligned with my previous schoolwork, especially within natural resource and law policies regarding wetlands,” Bernard said. “I think this experience will help jumpstart my career by giving me hands-on experience in my field of study while also strengthening my knowledge of Pennsylvania’s environmental laws.”
The internship has provided Bernard with opportunities to apply concepts learned in the classroom while gaining valuable insight into the day-to-day work of environmental professionals. From monitoring water quality to supporting wetland conservation efforts, her experiences have reinforced the importance of protecting Pennsylvania’s natural resources.
Bernard believes internships play a critical role in helping students prepare for their future careers.
“I think it’s important to complete an internship because it gives you a feel for the things you can pursue with your major,” she said. “It gives you an idea of what to expect in our professional careers, as well as helping us figure out what we truly enjoy.”
Through her work with the Waterways and Wetlands program, Bernard has gained firsthand experience with environmental regulations, compliance processes and restoration efforts that support healthy ecosystems across the Commonwealth.
Following graduation, Bernard hopes to build a career in environmental protection.
As she prepares to enter the workforce, Bernard is grateful for the opportunity to strengthen her skills, expand her professional network and contribute to projects that have a meaningful impact on Pennsylvania’s environment.
