Dr. Roger Wolbert, interim associate provost at Pennsylvania Western University, has been named PennWest Edinboro’s recipient of the 2025 Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education Keepers of the Flame Award.
Recipients from each campus in the State System were recognized during the PASSHE Summit on Oct. 29 at PennWest Clarion.
“The Keepers of the Flame Award honors individuals whose leadership, dedication and impact have strengthened the PASSHE community,” said Christa Cobb, assistant vice chancellor and chief diversity, equity and inclusion officer. “These recipients exemplify how a commitment to student success, inclusive excellence and academic achievement can transform lives, open doors and inspire others across our campuses.”
A respected educator and leader, Dr. Wolbert exemplifies the spirit of the award through his unwavering commitment to connection, inclusion and excellence. Known for bringing warmth, wit and wisdom to every interaction, he has worked to unite PennWest’s three campuses through a collaborative, student-centered approach.
“Receiving the Keeper of the Flame Award is deeply meaningful to me,” Wolbert said. “It affirms the values I’ve tried to uphold throughout my career – inclusion, equity and belonging – not just in the classroom but across the university and community. As someone who once chaired Edinboro’s President’s Commission on the Status of LGBTQIA+ People, this recognition feels especially personal. It’s a reminder that the work we do to create safe, affirming spaces matters and is seen.”
Wolbert’s career in education spans more than three decades and five countries. Before his appointment as PennWest’s interim associate provost in 2024, he served as a professor of mathematics education. He joined the Edinboro faculty in 2011, after teaching in schools and universities across the globe, including Jakarta Intercultural School in Indonesia, Escuela Campo Alegre in Caracas, Venezuela, and the Zurich International School in Switzerland.
A native of western Pennsylvania and a 1989 graduate of PennWest Clarion, Wolbert began his teaching career at Mercyhurst Preparatory School in Erie before moving abroad. He later taught with PA Learners Online and North East High School in Pennsylvania before transitioning to higher education full time. His international and domestic experiences have shaped his inclusive leadership style and global perspective.
“My journey has been one of growth, resilience and purpose,” he said. “Each role has built upon the last, shaped by mentors like Dr. Marc Sylvester, who believed in me when I was a temporary faculty member and helped secure my tenure-track position. Without his support, I wouldn’t be here today.”
Throughout his career, Wolbert has balanced analytical precision with empathy and care, drawing from his mathematics background to inform his leadership. He has led curriculum redesigns through an inclusive lens, mentored Edinboro Noyce Teacher Scholars, and strengthened connections across PennWest’s campuses.
“Whether improving university systems, playing organ at church or introducing colleagues with care, Roger ensures everyone feels seen, valued and part of the choir,” said his nominator. “Roger reminds us that leadership grounded in authenticity and care can truly light the way for others.”
Reflecting on his role, Wolbert added, “Belonging means that every student, faculty member and staff person feels seen, heard and valued. It’s about creating spaces where people can bring their whole selves – their identities, experiences and aspirations. Belonging in a safe environment is the foundation of learning and growth.”
He credited mentors, students and colleagues for shaping his journey. “This award is not just a recognition of my work,” he said. “It’s a celebration of the many students, colleagues and mentors who have walked this journey with me. I look forward to continuing to serve PennWest with integrity, compassion and a commitment to equity.”
In addition to earning a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Clarion, Wolbert holds a Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction from Michigan State University, a Master of Science in Computers in Education from Shenandoah University, a postgraduate diploma in Educational Studies from the University of Melbourne, a Master of Science in Mathematics Education from Millersville University, and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction and the Science of Learning with a concentration in Mathematics Education from the University at Buffalo.
The Keepers of the Flame Award recognizes individuals for their contributions to creating and promoting diverse, equitable and inclusive environments that cultivate a sense of belonging. They are members of the university who inspire others, engage in collaboration and enact positive change. The annual award began in 2022.
