PennWest University has officially launched its restructured exploratory studies program, empowering students to explore their academic and career interests with purpose and confidence.

Formerly known as the undeclared/undecided program, the exploratory studies program reflects a student-centered approach to academic discovery.

Each year, more than 100 PennWest students begin their university journey by exploring possible majors. This program ensures students benefit from intentional guidance, clear goals, and structured support — including one-on-one connections with a dedicated career coach — as they explore options and identify the right academic path.

“This is about meeting students where they are and helping them chart a path forward,” said James Fisher, Ph.D., interim provost and vice president for Academic Affairs. “By reframing exploration as a strength, we’re helping students see that curiosity and purpose go hand in hand.”

Key enhancement’s include:

  • New name and focus: The transition from “Undecided” to “Exploratory” emphasizes proactive academic exploration and student agency.
  • Dedicated Exploratory Studies webpage: A new online hub outlines the program’s four milestones, detailing how students can progress from exploration to declaring a major.
  • Simplified change-of-major process: An updated “Change Your Major” webpage now offers clear, centralized guidance for students, faculty, and staff.

Together, these enhancements make it easier for students to connect with advisors and career coaches, discover their strengths, and make informed choices about their academic futures.

The exploratory studies program underscores PennWest’s commitment to providing clear, supportive pathways for every student — from first-year explorers to graduates pursuing their passions with confidence.
