From Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, to the heart of the PennWest community, Monica Forte has spent her college years turning passion into purpose—and inspiring others to do the same.
A communication major with a minor in event planning and management, Forte has embraced every opportunity to lead, connect and create a sense of belonging on campus.
“Becoming involved in various clubs and organizations, and building relationships with student affairs professionals, sparked my interest in the field,” Forte said. “Their dedication to creating an inclusive and supportive environment made me feel welcomed and valued, which had a lasting impact on my college experience. I want to give back by fostering that same sense of belonging for both incoming and current students, helping them feel at home and supported as they navigate their own journeys.”
From her earliest days at PennWest, Forte immersed herself in student life. Her involvement spans an impressive list of organizations and leadership roles: Alpha Alpha Alpha First-Generation Honor Society, vice speaker of the house in the Student Government’s House of Representatives, student coordinator for the Office of Greek Life, and financial secretary for the Student Activities Board, just to name a few.
As a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority and the PennWest Leadership Academy, she led by example, encouraging others to step up, speak out, and serve their community.
“These experiences have been crucial in both my personal and professional growth,” she said. “They challenged me to step out of my comfort zone, allowing me to build confidence and develop important leadership skills. Through these opportunities, I not only grew as an individual but also made a meaningful impact on campus, connecting with others and contributing to the community in ways I never anticipated.”
Her role as a peer mentor and her work with TRIO, Commuter Council and the SAI Board of Directors reflect her dedication to inclusivity and support for all students. Whether coordinating events or advocating for her peers, Forte’s commitment never wavered.
One of the defining moments of her academic career was her honors thesis—a deep dive into student retention across PASSHE schools.
“This project has been incredibly rewarding, as it combines my passion for student success with real-world data and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the field,” she said.
Looking ahead, Forte plans to return to PennWest California for graduate studies in corporate communication while earning a certificate in student affairs. Her ultimate goal is to become a director of student development and engagement at a university, where she can continue to create inclusive, empowering environments for students to thrive.
She credits much of her success to a trio of mentors who guided her along the way: Melissa Dunn, Darrek Harshberger, and Diane Hasbrouck.
“Their constant support, guidance and belief in me helped shape who I am today, and I truly owe so much of my growth and success to them,” she said.
As she prepares to take her next steps, Monica leaves behind a legacy of leadership and inspiration, and she has one piece of advice for those just beginning their college journey:
“Cherish every moment, take risks, and say yes to the experiences that come your way. Get involved, make meaningful connections and never stop learning. College is such a special time that flies by—so make it unforgettable, and let it shape who you’re meant to become.”
