A college journey of purpose, policy and personal finance

Emily Cevera

For Emily Cevera, education has never been just about checking boxes—it’s been about discovery, connection and building a life of purpose.

The Ashtabula, Ohio, native is graduating from PennWest Edinboro with degrees in political science and criminal justice, a minor in personal financial planning, and a clear direction for her future. Her path, shaped by curiosity and meaningful mentorship, is a testament to the power of keeping an open mind and seizing unexpected opportunities.

“I have always been deeply passionate about learning,” Cevera said. “Majoring in political science allowed me to expand my understanding of the world and connect with people from all kinds of backgrounds.”

That desire for knowledge quickly expanded into a dual major and eventually led her to a surprising but fulfilling new interest—financial planning.

On campus, Cevera took full advantage of the opportunities available to her. She found joy and connection through club basketball, rekindling her competitive spirit and sense of community after stepping away from varsity tennis. She participated in the Student Government Association, where she made her voice heard and contributed to shaping student life.

“It placed me in spaces where I could be heard and make a tangible impact,” she said.

Professionally, her most transformative experience came through the Finance and Personal Financial Planning Club.

“My involvement in the Finance and Personal Financial Planning Club helped me grow professionally and build valuable industry connections,” Cevera said. “Serving as the club’s president in my final semester also allowed me to strengthen my leadership and organizational skills.”

Those experiences helped solidify her decision to pursue a career as a Certified Financial Planner™, with the goal of helping others achieve lasting financial security.

A pivotal moment in Cevera’s college journey came during a conversation with Dr. Mike Engdahl, a faculty member who also coached her on the court.

“During one of our check-ins about post-grad plans, he introduced me to the Personal Financial Planning program and invited me to shadow him at his private practice,” she said. “That experience sparked a passion I didn’t even know I had.”

Cevera’s college years were filled with meaningful, real-world experiences—none more impactful than her capstone project, which focused on developing a comprehensive financial plan for a real person.

“This project gave me hands-on experience applying what I’ve learned in a practical, meaningful way,” Cevera said. “It not only deepened my understanding of financial planning but also helped me feel more prepared—both personally and professionally—for the responsibilities I’ll take on in my future career.”

With graduation on the horizon, Emily is setting her sights on the next big step: passing the Certified Financial Planner™ exam in July.

“I feel confident heading into it, thanks to the thorough preparation provided by our PFP program,” she said. Beyond that, she hopes to build a career helping individuals and families navigate their financial futures with confidence and clarity.

As she reflects on her college experience, Emily emphasizes the value of growth, support and being open to change.

“Be comfortable with being uncomfortable,” she said of her advice to incoming students. “It’s okay to change your path—no matter how far along you are.”
