A growth mindset

Sarah Shabloski

When Sarah Shabloski graduates May 3 with a bachelor’s degree in allied health leadership, she will know she has the knowledge and skills to be successful.

“My online college experience at PennWest has been incredibly valuable in preparing me for the future,” she said. “Through the coursework and virtual learning opportunities, I have developed a strong foundation in my field of study.”

Shabloski, who is from McKean, Pennsylvania, said the diverse range of online classes has equipped her with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills that are essential for her career.

A class that she found to be particularly enlightening was Literature and Aging, which helped students understand what it’s like to be sick and to depend on medical professionals, family and friends.

“This course dove into what it’s like to be on the other side of the medical field,” she said. “It was both eye-opening and humbling.”

Although her classes were online, Shabloski was able to get involved with PennWest’s chapter of the National Society of Leadership and Success, which helped her learn valuable skills and insights.

“This society has been instrumental in helping me align my goals with my academic pursuits,” she said.

The NSLS lists having a growth mindset as the number one quality of a good leader, and Shabloski has taken it to heart. After graduation, she plans to pursue credentials in obstetrics and gynecology ultrasound. She doesn’t plan to stop there.

“My long-term career goal is to earn a master's degree, which will provide me with advanced knowledge and will open up opportunities for specialization and research in the field of ultrasound,” Shabloski said. “I aspire to take on leadership roles, where I can mentor future ultrasound technicians, sharing my expertise and guiding them toward excellence.”

While her schedule can be hectic, she has been able to lean on her parents, whom she considers to be her closest mentors.

“Their unwavering support and guidance have been invaluable throughout my academic journey. They have always encouraged me to pursue my dreams,” she said. “Their belief in my abilities has been a constant source of motivation, helping me stay focused and determined to achieve my goals.”

Shabloski wants students who are just beginning college to know that believing in themselves and staying organized are key to succeeding academically.

“College can be challenging, but don't be discouraged by setbacks. Learn from them and keep pushing forward. Enjoy the journey of growth and discovery, and make the most of every opportunity.”
