About Me
Karen Wise Lindeman, Ph.D. is a Professor in the Education Department teaching in the early childhood and elementary education program. She earned her Ph.D. in Early Childhood Education from SUNY Buffalo and her master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from SUNY Fredonia. Her associate degree (Itasca, MN) and bachelor’s degrees (Indiana University of PA) are both in American Sign Language and Deaf Education. She created Edinboro University’s undergraduate degree in Deaf Education, and she served as the First Year Experience (FYE) for the Edinboro Campus. Before coming to higher education, she spent 20 years in the public and private sector as an early intervention specialist, teacher of the deaf, educational interpreter, PreK teacher, Kindergarten teacher and Preschool Director. Dr. Lindeman’s research interests include implementing developmentally appropriate practices for very young children by way of active engagement, authentic assessment, and the inclusion of children with special needs. She is an advocate for young children and their families. Dr. Lindeman presents yearly at national and state conferences, often with her college students. Her work has been published in Young Children; Teaching Young Children (Both by the National Association for the Education of Young Children); School Community Journal; Odyssey: New Directions in Deaf Education (Gallaudet University Press); Exchange Childcare Press and The Clearing House: A Journal of Educational Strategies, Issues, and Ideas. Her most cited work in the field is her book chapter in Learning Across the Early Childhood Curriculum (2013).
