About Me

Dr. Harris is a Professor of Geology in the Biology, Earth and Environmental Sciences (BEES) Department at Pennsylvania Western University – California campus. He received his M.S. in Geochemistry from WVU in 2008 and his Ph.D. in Structural Geology from WVU in 2011. Dr. Harris teaches a number of courses at PennWest-Cal with a heavy emphasis on field work, including Mineralogy and Petrology, Structural Geology, Tectonics, Field Methods in Geology, Professional Development for Geologists, Computer Applications in Geology, Earth and Energy Resources, Dynamic Earth, Geochemistry, Geophysics, and the PASSHE-wide Field Camp in Geology. His research focuses on Mesozoic tectonic reconstructions of Arctic Basins using field mapping and geochronologic sample analysis and on structural and geophysical interpretations of the Appalachian Mountains and depositional basins. Geochemistry and Environmental research focuses on changes in daily and seasonal efficiencies of passive abandoned mine drainage facilities, particularly related to removal of heavy metals. Geophysical research includes Ground Penetrating Radar mapping of potential hazards at the Carrie Blast Furnaces in Pittsburgh and determination of unmarked graves at the Finleyville Cemetery. All research has a strong emphasis on student-faculty collaboration. Dr. Harris has served in several positions for the Pittsburgh Geological Society, including Director-at-Large, Program Coordinator, Webmaster, Vice-President, and President and has been a member of the board since 2012. Dr. Harris has also served as an annual instructor for the statewide licensure exam review seminar offered by the Pennsylvania Council of Professional Geology, has served on several university committees, organizes annual field environmental science workshops for local K-12 schools, and is the coordinator for the Geology club Adopt-A-Highway program.
