“My end goal with education is to eventually become an emergency room physician. I’ve just always been drawn to the high-stress environment, and I like kind of seeing new things every day.”

Not everyone can look past sideways rain during a campus tour and see their perfect fit, but for Max Moran, that stormy first visit to PennWest Edinboro was just the beginning of a whirlwind collegiate career defined by deep involvement and hands-on service.

Hailing from the small town of Minersville, Pennsylvania, Max arrived at Edinboro knowing exactly what he wanted out of his college experience: to be busy.

"I've always been a heavily involved student," Max explained. "I knew once I started college that I wanted to do the same thing."

Pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Biology on the pre-medicine track with a minor in chemistry, Max balances rigorous academics with an astonishing list of leadership roles, including serving as an Honors mentor and vice president of Circle K.

Some of his most visible work happens through Highland Ambassadors, where he helps welcome prospective students and families at admissions events, open houses, twilight tours and commencement. It is a role that lets him share what makes PennWest feel personal, while helping others picture themselves here, too. Through the Cooper Hall Ambassadors of Science, he has supported museum tours and planetarium programming for visiting elementary students, bringing science to life for younger learners.

That combination of service, communication and responsibility mirrors the future Max is working toward. He works overnight as an emergency room technician in his hometown hospital, and his long-term goal is to become an emergency room physician.

“I have just always been drawn to the high-stress environment,” he said.

He observes the leaders around him, from his sister – a registered nurse – to his club presidents, and adopts their best qualities.

"I like taking little things from people and making them a part of myself."

At PennWest, Max is not only preparing for a career in medicine. He is learning how to lead in moments that matter, how to serve others with confidence, and how to make an impact both on campus and back home. For him, leadership is not just another line on a resume. It is part of the kind of person – and physician – he wants to become.
