"I'm still early in my career, so I'm always open to learning and... finding ways to improve."

As the most prolific quarterback in California history, Noah Mitchell knows what it takes to excel on the field. His career from 2018 to 2022 was one for the record books, marked by 10,788 passing yards, 88 touchdowns, and an astonishing 11,055 total yards of offense. Yet, when he reflects on his time as a Vulcan, the highlights he cherishes most aren't found in a stat sheet. “Most of the highlights, I look at some of the stuff we did off the field,” he shares, recalling memories like supporting the band or participating in community service. These are the moments that truly defined his experience.

Now, Coach Mitchell returns to PennWest to lead the brand new women’s flag football program, a transition from player to coach that he approaches with a fresh perspective. Being early in his career, he’s not "stuck in... the things I've had success in" and is open to learning and innovation. He’s looking to build a program that instills the same sense of pride and community he felt as a player.

What excites him most about this new role is giving girls the chance to play a sport they love at the collegiate level. He recalls talking with numerous recruits who have "dreamed of being able to compete" but were limited by the contact nature of tackle football. Now, with flag football growing, these athletes have a new avenue to pursue their passion beyond high school.

Coach Mitchell is eager to develop a team that learns what it takes to be a college athlete, from daily practices to conditioning and weightlifting. He believes his experience as a recent student-athlete gives him an advantage in connecting with his players. He can relate to their experiences and build a strong rapport, which is also a key part of his advice for incoming students. “Our professors are here to look out for us,” he says, emphasizing the importance of building relationships to get the most out of the college experience. He sees student-athletes as having a unique advantage in this regard, as they always have a built-in support system in their teammates.

Noah Mitchell's return to PennWest embodies the university's commitment to innovation and empowerment. His journey from record-breaking player to head coach of an inaugural team demonstrates how PennWest creates opportunities and fosters a new generation of athletes. He's not just building a football program; he's building a foundation for future female athletes to thrive and achieve their athletic and academic ambitions.
