Darrek Harshberger found his true calling at PennWest through campus involvement and
a willingness to change direction. Originally from Duncanville, Pennsylvania, Darrek
entered college with a plan to become a math teacher.
"Growing up I've always wanted to be with students and help students," Darrek explains.
However, during his sophomore year, he experienced a revelation. "I said, you know,
something doesn't feel right. I enjoy helping the students more like realize their
passion. But this math part is not clicking."
After exploring his options and becoming heavily involved in campus organizations, he found a new direction. "I ended up switching my major to communication studies because it is such a broad area. I had so many different options," he shares. His
academic pursuits grew to include minors in event planning and management, marketing, and tourism.
Darrek's enthusiasm for campus life led him to graduate early with his bachelor's
degree, but he wasn't finished. "I realized my academic journey wasn't done. I love
this campus. I love everything about it." He returned to earn a master's in corporate communications, setting his sights on a career in student affairs.
Today, as the assistant director of student development and engagement, Darrek thrives
in a role that perfectly aligns with his passions. "It's not like one of those jobs
that you regret waking up to. I love waking up and coming in and helping students
every day," he says.
For students unsure about their academic direction, Darrek offers practical advice:
"Take your gen eds very seriously and realize that these are here to help you, but
also can influence your exploration." His second piece of advice is equally passionate:
"Take every opportunity that you have at a university and get involved. Getting involved
gave me so much knowledge."
Looking ahead, Darrek has ambitious plans that reflect his dedication to higher education.
"The next 5 to 10 years, I definitely am going for my PhD in Student Affairs and Higher
Education," he shares. His ultimate aspiration reveals his passion for education:
"My number one goal is to definitely become a president of a university one day. I
have so much love for education. I have so much love for having a student realize
their true potential."
For Darrek, PennWest isn't just where he works—it's home. "I don't see myself anywhere
else but PennWest," he affirms. "I have so much time to help foster the California
campus and expand my knowledge across all three campuses."
