"There are so many great opportunities to get involved at PennWest."

Greek life became meaningful to Zion Baxter the moment he realized it could offer both connection and a tangible way to serve others. What he found at PennWest was more than a fraternity experience. He found a community built on teamwork, outreach and leadership.

Pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Marketing at PennWest California and a proud member of Sigma Tau Gamma, Zion has embraced leadership through fraternity life and through his role as vice president of the Interfraternity Council executive board. But what stands out most in his story is not just involvement; it is the way he connects leadership with outreach, teamwork and belonging.

“When I transferred  to PennWest California, I didn’t realize right away how many community outreach opportunities there would be,” Zion said.

That discovery changed the way he saw Greek life.

Growing up, Zion had been involved in service through youth groups and church activities, so giving back was already important to him. At PennWest, he found a version of that same purpose within fraternity life — along with a brotherhood that made campus feel smaller, friendlier and more connected. He quickly saw that Greek life at PennWest is about more than social events. It is about building relationships, supporting the campus community and doing meaningful work together.

One example is Big Event, where students help local families and serve the surrounding community. Another is Sigma Tau Gamma’s support of Special Olympics through the annual Polar Plunge, a fundraiser that combines philanthropy, school spirit and a willingness to jump into discomfort for a good cause.

“There’s a lot of great things and great opportunities that I get to do,” Zion said.

He also loves the collaborative side of Greek life. Events like Greek Week and Greek Sing give students the chance to work together, compete, perform and represent their organizations with pride. For Zion, those moments reflect one of the biggest benefits of being involved: learning how to work with people toward a shared goal.

That is exactly what he hopes to carry into his future career in marketing. In five years, Zion hopes to be established in a professional role where he can apply the teamwork and leadership skills he has developed at PennWest. “I can use my teamwork skills, even my leadership skills, to help complete what needs done,” he said.

At PennWest, Zion has found a place where service and connection go hand in hand. Through Greek life, he is learning how to lead, how to collaborate and how to make a positive impact on the people around him.
