PennWest Clarion’s Small Business Development Center and its staff were recognized for excellence in multiple categories during the Pennsylvania Small Business Development Center 2025 Growth Conference in May at Penn State University.
Clarion and SBDCs at Pitt and Temple tied for the Center Performance Award, which recognizes the top three centers by percentage, demonstrating achievement of exceptional performance metrics for fiscal year 2024.
Aleshia Marshall was recognized as State Star. The award, given for outstanding performance and client satisfaction, recognizes extraordinary performers who have made strong contributions to their state network. It is the highest accolade achievable by the PASBDC team. Marshall was commended for her innovation, having created tools that streamlined the business plan and financial projection process, allowing clients to move from idea to funding with clarity and confidence. Her client impact is unmatched, from helping entrepreneurs secure six-figure loans to managing more than $23 million in capital formation over the past three years. With outstanding metrics, a service-first mindset, and deep client trust, Marshall sets the standard for excellence in our network.
Cindy Nellis was named Director of the Year, which recognizes a center director who has gone above and beyond for the staff and the network’s strategic priorities. Nellis was cited for leading with intention and fostering a culture of collaboration, continuous learning and innovation. She was described as someone who listens deeply, values different perspectives, and consistently makes decisions that prioritize both her team and the small businesses they serve.
Jeanne Best, Clarion SBDC’s marketing and training and WEDnet coordinator, received the Administrative Service Award, which recognizes exemplary service to the network through communication, engagement and dedication to providing high quality customer service. Best coordinates 75 to 95 training events each year, manages newsletters, oversees social media and supports the success of clients and colleagues. Since 2020, she has overseen nearly $1.5 million in WEDnet allocations.
Funding support and resources are provided by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania through the Department of Community & Economic Development (DCED); through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA); and in part through support from the host institutions.
