PennWest earns national recognition for preparing future teachers

PennWest University has earned national recognition for its commitment to preparing future educators to teach reading through evidence-based instruction grounded in the science of reading.
A recent review by the National Council on Teacher Quality (NCTQ) awarded PennWest's Early Childhood and Elementary Education teacher preparation program an "A+" rating for Reading Foundations, placing the university among a select group of Pennsylvania institutions recognized for strong preparation in literacy instruction. The review evaluated more than 700 teacher preparation programs nationwide and assessed how effectively programs prepare future teachers to teach reading using research-based practices.
The recognition builds on PennWest's growing reputation as a leader in literacy education. In 2025, PennWest's Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood and Elementary Education and Master of Education, Reading Specialist programs earned accreditation from the International Dyslexia Association, a distinction awarded to programs that meet rigorous standards for evidence-based literacy instruction.
"Every child deserves a teacher who understands how reading develops and how to support students when they struggle," said Dr. Timothy Stevenson, associate dean of the College of Education, Arts and Humanities, and executive director of the School of Education.
"This recognition reflects the commitment of our faculty to preparing future educators with the knowledge, practical experience and evidence-based instructional strategies they need to help students become confident readers. It's encouraging to see that work recognized nationally."
NCTQ's review evaluated how teacher preparation programs address the five essential components of reading instruction: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Programs were also assessed on whether coursework aligns with established reading research and prepares future teachers to apply those practices in the classroom.
For more than 170 years, PennWest and its predecessor institutions have prepared educators for Pennsylvania schools and communities. Today, the university's School of Education serves students across the California, Clarion, and Edinboro campuses and through Global Online, preparing future teachers, school leaders and specialists to meet the evolving needs of learners.
"The science of reading continues to shape literacy instruction across the country, and schools are seeking educators who are prepared to put that research into practice," Stevenson said. "Our programs combine a strong academic foundation with meaningful field experiences so that graduates enter the profession ready to make an immediate impact on student learning."
Through classroom instruction, field experiences and student teaching placements, PennWest education students gain hands-on experience applying evidence-based literacy practices in real educational settings. The university's Reading Specialist program further prepares certified educators to design interventions, support struggling readers and help improve literacy outcomes in schools.
As states and school districts place increasing emphasis on reading proficiency and evidence-based literacy instruction, PennWest remains committed to preparing educators who can help every student develop the skills necessary for lifelong learning and success.
