California students donate free library

Students at PennWest California expanded access to books in the local community through a recent student-led service project.

Members of the campus Speech and Hearing Club, part of the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA), designed, built and donated a free library that has been installed in the borough of California. The project was supported by a student-organized book drive, which collected donated books to help stock the library.

With support from California Mayor Frank Stetar, the proposal was presented to and approved by the California Borough Council. The library was installed along Hickory Street near the children’s playground, providing easy access for families and residents.

The initiative reflects PennWest’s ongoing commitment to community engagement and hands-on learning opportunities that empower students to make a meaningful impact beyond campus.

A dedication of the free library was held May 4.
