PennWest University’s online Master of Social Work program has been ranked No. 1 in Pennsylvania for 2026 by MastersInSocialWorkOnline.org.
The ranking evaluated 13 online MSW programs across the state, with particular emphasis on affordability. Graduation and retention rates, graduate earnings, program flexibility, and accreditation and licensure alignment also were considered.
Offered through PennWest Global Online, the university’s MSW program features fully asynchronous coursework. Its trauma-informed curriculum prepares students for advanced practice in settings such as health care facilities, mental health clinics, schools, government agencies and nonprofit organizations.
“Our students often balance graduate study with careers, families, and other responsibilities, so flexibility is essential,” said Kimberly Hardner, DSW, LSW, chair of the Department of Social Work, Sociology and Human Services. “This recognition reflects our commitment to providing an affordable, high-quality program that combines experienced faculty, a trauma-informed curriculum, and meaningful field experiences to prepare graduates to serve individuals, families, and communities.
PennWest offers two paths to the degree: a 60-credit program for students whose undergraduate degrees are in fields other than social work and a 33-credit option for eligible graduates of CSWE-accredited Bachelor of Social Work programs.
Students also gain hands-on experience through supervised field placements aligned with their professional goals. PennWest’s field education team works with students to identify opportunities in their local communities, allowing them to apply what they learn while building professional networks close to home.
The program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education and prepares graduates to pursue professional licensure and careers in clinical practice, administration, advocacy, policy, and community outreach.
