For many golfers, playing a round at Pebble Beach Golf Links is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. For Cal Koukides, a junior from Le Roy, New York, pursuing a Bachelor of Science in sport management studies: professional golf management at PennWest California, the iconic course has become part of his daily routine.
Koukides is completing a professional internship at Pebble Beach Resorts, home to the legendary Pebble Beach Golf Links and the acclaimed Spyglass Hill Golf Course. The experience is providing him with real-world training in golf operations, customer service, facility management and guest relations – key skills for future golf industry professionals.
"I have had the opportunity to take on a variety of responsibilities during my internship at Pebble Beach Resorts," said Koukides.
His duties span nearly every aspect of the guest experience. As a starter, he helps golfers prepare for their rounds by loading bags onto carts, coordinating caddie arrangements and ensuring guests are ready before heading to the first tee. He also serves as a tee captain, communicating pace-of-play expectations and course conditions while helping maintain the flow of play.
Additional responsibilities include working at the bag drop, assisting guests with clubs and providing customer service, as well as staffing the 18th-hole podium, where he interacts with golfers following their rounds, cleans clubs and shoes, distributes commemorative bag tags and assists with cart operations. Behind the scenes, he prepares golf carts and helps maintain practice facilities.
As a student in PennWest's Professional Golf Management program, Koukides said the internship has reinforced concepts he has learned in courses focused on customer service, golf operations and facility management.
"As a Professional Golf Management student, many of the concepts I have learned in my coursework, especially customer service, golf operations and facility management, are being reinforced through my daily responsibilities," he said.
Working at both Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hill has given him firsthand exposure to the standards required to operate two of the most respected golf facilities in the world.
Koukides believes internships are an essential part of preparing students for careers in the golf industry because they provide hands-on experience that complements classroom instruction.
"I believe internships are important because they provide real-world experience that cannot be fully replicated in a classroom," he said. "They allow students to apply their knowledge, develop professional skills and gain a better understanding of their chosen industry."
The internship has also expanded his professional network and provided opportunities to learn from experienced golf industry leaders.
While Koukides is still exploring his long-term career goals, his experience at Pebble Beach Resorts has strengthened his commitment to the profession.
"My goal is to keep learning, gaining experience and taking advantage of opportunities that will help me grow as a golf professional," he said. "This internship has strengthened my passion for the industry, and I am excited to see where that path leads in the future."
For Koukides, the internship represents more than an opportunity to work at a world-famous golf resort. It is a chance to gain experience at the highest level of the industry while building a foundation for a successful career in golf management and operations.
