PennWest student leader turns classroom learning into entrepreneurial experience

Through leadership roles, academic achievement and an internship focused on event planning, Rylee Kendro is preparing for career success

PennWest student Rylee Kendro is gaining hands-on experience as an event producer intern.

Balancing multiple degree programs, campus leadership positions and an internship might seem overwhelming to most students. For Rylee Kendro, however, each opportunity is helping her build the skills and experience needed to pursue her professional goals.

A native of White Oak, Pennsylvania, Kendro is pursuing dual degrees in early childhood and elementary education and integrated business with a concentration in event planning and management, along with a minor in hospitality at PennWest California. Outside the classroom, she serves as president of the California Student Government Association, is a board member of Student Association Inc., a member of the PennWest Leadership Academy, Student Activities Board and Phi Sigma Sigma, and works with the Student Engagement Office as a Homecoming work-study student.

Through her internship as an event producer with GrandEvents LLC, Kendro has gained firsthand experience in event planning, entrepreneurship and business development while applying concepts learned in her coursework.

“During my internship, I have spoken at networking events, attended webinars about starting and growing a business, and researched ideas, venues and resources for upcoming events that we are planning,” Kendro said. “I have also had the opportunity to work on developing my own business, which has given me valuable hands-on experience with entrepreneurship, planning and organization.”

The experience has allowed her to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world application while strengthening skills that will serve her across multiple career paths.

“Researching events, attending educational webinars and working on my own business have strengthened my skills in planning, communication, marketing, organization and problem-solving,” she said. “It has allowed me to connect classroom knowledge with real-world experience.”

Kendro said the internship has also helped her grow personally and professionally, providing opportunities to build confidence and develop leadership skills.

“This experience has helped me build confidence in professional settings while improving my communication, leadership and organizational skills,” she said. “It has also provided practical experience in event planning and entrepreneurship that will benefit me as I pursue a career and apply the knowledge gained through both of my degree programs.”

For Kendro, internships are an essential part of the college experience because they offer opportunities to learn beyond the classroom and gain valuable professional experience.

“Completing an internship is important because it allows students to gain hands-on experience and apply what they have learned in the classroom,” she said. “It helps build professional skills, develop industry connections, and better prepares students for future careers by exposing them to real-world challenges and opportunities.”

As graduation approaches, Kendro plans to combine her diverse academic background, leadership experience and entrepreneurial ambitions to pursue a meaningful career while continuing to grow her business.

“I hope to find opportunities where I can combine my passion for planning, creativity, leadership and working with others to make a positive impact in my community,” she said.

Whether she is planning events, leading student organizations or exploring new business opportunities, Kendro is building a foundation for a future that combines education, entrepreneurship and community engagement.
