Allegheny Metals Collective exhibition explores collaboration across disciplines at the Bruce Gallery

In Tandem is on display in PennWest Edinboro's Bruce Gallery

The Bruce Gallery on the Edinboro campus of PennWest University is proud to announce the opening of In Tandem, a new exhibition organized by the Allegheny Metals Collective.

In Tandem asks us to consider what happens when people from different disciplines combine their expertise to create a work of art. For this exhibition, members of the Allegheny Metals Collective were invited to step beyond the boundaries of their own discipline by partnering with a collaborator from outside the field of metalsmithing. Artists, scientists, poets, writers, engineers and other creatives were invited to bring their distinct perspectives, methods and ways of thinking to the conversation.

Each pair was challenged to explore a shared theme or concept and to create a representation of that exploration. One work by each pair was directly informed by the collaborative process, allowing the exchange between partners to become part of the work itself. These collaborative pieces are exhibited alongside examples of each individual’s own practice, enhancing the conversation and inviting visitors to see how each partner’s expertise shaped the shared result.

The resulting exhibition is a record of conversations between disciplines, materials, processes and ways of seeing. The works on view, both diverse and compelling, reflect moments of translation, discovery, tension and connection, revealing how collaboration can expand the possibilities of the creative process.

“What excites me about In Tandem is that the collaboration itself is on view,” says Maria Ferguson, director of the Bruce Gallery. “When you see each artist’s individual work alongside what they made together, you can trace how ideas moved between them, and how sharing expertise opened up possibilities neither partner would have found alone.”

Founded in 2015, the Allegheny Metals Collective (AMC) is a Pittsburgh-based community of artists dedicated to the exchange of knowledge, ideas and techniques through exhibitions, demonstrations and lectures. Its members work across a broad range of practices, including traditional metalsmithing, fine jewelry, enameling and mixed media.

In Tandem will be on view in Bruce Gallery through Sunday, Jan. 31.
