Former Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle will present “Play Your Heart Out” at PennWest University campuses Nov. 3-5. The presentations are open to the public.

Hurdle, a 17-year Major League Baseball manager and the 2013 National League Manager of the Year, will share lessons on passion, resilience, personal responsibility and giving your best when facing challenges.

The schedule is:

  • PennWest Edinboro: 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, Louis C. Cole Auditorium – Memorial Hall.
  • PennWest Clarion: 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, Marwick Boyd Auditorium.
  • PennWest California: 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, Natali Student Center Performance Center.

The visit has special meaning for Edinboro native Jake Haugh, now a PennWest California senior and men’s soccer player. As an Edinboro Elementary School student, Haugh requested donations instead of birthday gifts, raising more than $3,000 in his initial effort for Hurdle’s Wins for Kids charity, which benefited the Prader-Willi syndrome program at the Children’s Institute of Pittsburgh.

The effort sparked a lasting friendship with Hurdle. Through continued fundraising, Haugh became the program’s second-largest donor.

“Clint has shown me that leadership isn’t always about the position you hold—it’s about how you show up for other people and the impact you choose to make,” Haugh said.

Hurdle’s ties to the region also include appearances at California’s 2016 hockey Homecoming game and as grand marshal of Clarion’s 2012 Autumn Leaf Festival parade.
