Raechel Braun selected to serve on PennWest Council of Trustees

PennWest Clarion sophomore Raechel Braun has been selected to serve as the student representative on the Pennsylvania Western University Council of Trustees — a role that places her at the center of university leadership and decision-making.

Braun will step into the position following the graduation of current student trustee Timothy John in May. As a full voting member of the council, she will join trustees in overseeing critical aspects of the university, including administration, fiscal management and the physical plant.

For Braun, who is pursuing dual degrees in mathematics and sport management studies and a certificate in data analytics, the opportunity represents both an honor and a responsibility.

“Being selected means that people are putting their trust in me to help enact change for the betterment of PennWest as a whole,” Braun said. “I am very honored, and I cannot wait to get to work.”

A native of St. Marys, Pennsylvania, Braun has already established herself as a dedicated student leader. She is a member of the PennWest Honors Program, a scholar-athlete on the women’s cross-country team and an active participant in campus life through Student Senate, the Math Club and the Eagle Ambassadors program.

Her path to this role stems from her desire to make a difference.

“After I first joined Student Senate, I was not sure how I would fit in, but I wanted to help make campus life better,” she said. “When I heard that the Student Trustee position was open, I knew I had to take a chance. I want to become a better leader and take every opportunity that comes my way. But most importantly, I want to help enact good change for PennWest.”

A willingness to step forward has been a defining theme of Braun’s college experience. While she had some interest in student advocacy in high school, it wasn’t until arriving at PennWest Clarion that she fully embraced leadership opportunities.

In her new role, Braun is focused on ensuring that students feel heard and supported.

“I want people to know I am someone they can talk to about any concerns,” she said. “I want to be approachable and help make everyone feel welcome while enhancing their experience in any way I can.”

Braun’s academic background in mathematics and data analytics uniquely positions her to engage with the council’s work, particularly in reviewing budgets and institutional planning. Combined with her experience in Student Senate and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, she has developed strong skills in communication, collaboration and problem-solving.

Beyond campus, her commitment to service is evident through volunteer work with organizations such as Lions Club, Rotary Club and community initiatives in her hometown. She also serves as a volunteer coach for her former high school basketball program, further reflecting her dedication to mentorship and leadership.

Faculty and mentors say those qualities set her apart.

“Raechel is remarkably hardworking and dedicated to continuous improvement,” said Dr. Joseph Croskey, Act 101 Flourish program director. “She doesn’t just accept feedback — she seeks it out and acts upon it. She brings both the analytical skills and the empathy needed to represent students effectively.”

As she looks ahead, Braun is eager to grow through the experience — particularly in building connections and strengthening her ability to advocate for others. She views serving as student trustee as more than a leadership role — it is an opportunity to create meaningful impact, amplify student voices and help shape the future of PennWest.
