Pennsylvania Western University is launching three new academic schools: the School of Education, School of Business, and School of Nursing — a major step forward in strengthening PennWest’s academic identity and regional impact.

The PennWest Council of Trustees formally approved the creation of the schools, which will go into effect July 1, 2025.

Elevating PennWest’s Strengths

The new schools will:

  • Highlight PennWest’s historic strengths in teacher preparation, healthcare education, and business.
  • Enhance student recruitment and alumni engagement.
  • Expand workforce partnerships and fundraising efforts.

Each school will remain within its academic college and be led by an associate dean and executive director, charged with driving school-level innovation and external outreach.

“This is a bold and strategic move that reflects PennWest’s deep commitment to serving the people and employers of western Pennsylvania,” said J.D. Dunbar, chair of the Council of Trustees.

“By clearly defining our schools of Education, Business, and Nursing, we are reinforcing our leadership in areas that matter most to the region’s future.”

Advancing a Vision for the Future

With strong community partnerships, a growing global online presence, and a focus on hands-on learning, the new schools will serve as pillars of PennWest’s strategic plan.

“This milestone reflects who we are and where we’re going as an institution,” said Dr. Jon Anderson, president of PennWest University.

“These schools honor our legacy while positioning us as a next-generation university. They represent our deep commitment to academic excellence, student success, and the long-term vitality of the region.”

Leadership

Each school will maintain its home within an academic college and be led by an associate dean and executive director. These leaders will advance external engagement, alumni relations, and strategic partnerships:

  • Timothy Stevenson, associate dean, College of Education, Arts, and Humanities; executive director, School of Education, tstevenson@pennwest.edu
  • Juanice Vega, associate dean, College of Science, Technology and Business; executive director, School of Business, jvega@pennwest.edu
