Mulligan earns dual degrees at PennWest, combining political science and sport management

Ian Mulligan of Ebensburg, Pennsylvania, graduated from PennWest California on Saturday, Dec. 13, earning dual degrees in political science and sport management with a concentration in professional golf management. His academic path reflects a wide-ranging curiosity, strong leadership involvement and a commitment to making the most of every opportunity.
When Mulligan arrived at PennWest California, he wasn’t certain where his passions would lead. That uncertainty quickly turned into exploration and purpose.
“My passion coming into Cal was still somewhat unknown, but I quickly learned I loved learning about others and getting new experiences every day,” he said.
That realization ultimately guided his decision to pursue degrees in both political science and sport management.
Mulligan was deeply involved on campus, serving in multiple leadership roles. He was elected a senator in Student Government, a position he held from 2022 through 2025. Within the Professional Golf Management (PGM) Student Society, he served as secretary and social chair during the 2023–2024 academic year before being elected treasurer for 2024–2025. He was also active in the PennWest Honors Program and was a member of Pi Sigma Alpha, the national political science honor society, as well as the National Eagle Scout Association.
He credits these organizations not only with developing his leadership skills, but also with shaping his personal growth.
“These organizations helped me better multiple areas of my life, but they also allowed me to meet friends that I will continue to know my entire life,” Mulligan said. “Those friendships are the reason I was able to be successful, as we all pushed each other to be better.”
Mulligan’s academic experience was complemented by a series of competitive internships that broadened his professional perspective. He served as an executive office intern for the Pennsylvania Auditor General and completed internships in the golf industry as an interim assistant professional and operational intern at Deal Golf & Country Club in New Jersey, as well as a sales and operations intern at Farmington Country Club in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Throughout his time at PennWest California, Mulligan was guided by mentors who helped shape his academic and professional direction. He credits faculty members Dr. Joseph Heim, JR Pond, Justin Barroner and Derek Dejidas for their consistent support.
“These individuals always watched out for me and put every opportunity I could have ever wanted within reach,” he said. “I have learned a lot about life and school from these men. My Cal career would not be the same without them.”
Looking ahead, Mulligan is focused on long-term goals, including attending law school and building a successful career. He said his college experience reinforced the value of hard work and perseverance.
“My parents have always stressed the importance of a good work ethic, but college really showed me how much it can truly pay off,” he said.
As he reflects on his journey, Mulligan offers simple but meaningful advice to future students.
“Never underestimate your own potential,” he said. “If someone else believes in you, there’s no reason you can’t believe in yourself. As cliché as it might sound, if you believe you can do something, you probably can.”
