Edinboro alumnus named superintendent of Arlington Cemetery

Edinboro alumnus John G. Knapp ’85 has been named superintendent of Arlington National Military Cemeteries, a role that places him at the helm of one of the nation’s most sacred places. With more than 45 years of combined military and federal service, Knapp brings a wealth of experience and a deep sense of honor to the position.
Knapp, who holds a bachelor’s degree in secondary education – social studies from Edinboro, served in both active and reserve components of the U.S. Army Reserve and U.S. Marine Corps. He retired from the U.S. Marine Corps at the rank of lieutenant colonel and has held key leadership positions at several of the nation’s largest cemeteries, including most recently as deputy director of the Florida National Cemetery and its satellite, Bay Pines National Cemetery.
“It is our solemn duty to care for Arlington National Cemetery and all who are laid to rest here,” said Karen Durham-Aguilera, executive director of Army National Military Cemeteries. “We are thrilled to welcome a leader who understands the profound significance of these hallowed grounds and possesses the qualities needed to guide the cemetery forward.”
In his new role, Knapp will oversee the daily administration, operations, and maintenance of Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia, and the Soldiers’ and Airmen’s’ Home National Cemetery in Washington, D.C. He is responsible for the upkeep of 650 acres, more than 5,000 annual funeral services and the experience of more than three million annual visitors. He will lead a team of more than 200 civilian and military employees.
“As I step into the role of superintendent, I am filled with a deep sense of honor and responsibility,” Knapp said. “I am particularly looking forward to being part of preserving and honoring the legacies of the brave men and women who served our nation, ensuring that their sacrifices are remembered.”
