Rafiqe Hilliard

Rafiqe Hilliard walked across the stage Saturday, Dec. 13, graduating from PennWest California with dual degrees in studio arts and digital media technology. A native of Chester, Pennsylvania, Hilliard balanced the demands of academics and creativity while competing as a member of the California Vulcans football team.

Football initially helped shape Hilliard’s college journey, providing both motivation and perspective. While athletics played a major role in his development, it also helped him recognize the depth of his passion for art and design. That realization encouraged him to pursue his creative interests seriously and transform them into an academic and professional focus.

During his time at PennWest, Hilliard immersed himself in campus life and creative expression. He participated in numerous school events, including the Black Student Union’s annual Black Market, experiences that reinforced the value of connection, self-expression, and authenticity.

Hilliard’s creative vision extends well beyond graduation. His short- and long-term goal is to spread positivity, unity, and motivation through clothing, using design as a medium to uplift and connect people worldwide. He hopes his work will resonate across cultures and communities, carrying meaning as well as style.

Reflecting on his PennWest experience, Hilliard credits the people around him for shaping his journey. He expresses deep appreciation for faculty, friends, and fellow students, noting that each interaction contributed to his personal and professional growth.

Academically, one of the most impactful experiences for Hilliard was developing his professional portfolio. The process showcased his artistic evolution and gave him tangible evidence of how far he had progressed as both an artist and an individual.

As he looks ahead, Hilliard believes his college experience has prepared him to face future challenges with resilience and adaptability. His advice to incoming students is simple but powerful:

“Work hard and stay humble,” Hilliard said. “Be yourself and chase your dreams for you – not for anyone else.” Above all, he encourages students to strive every day to be the best version of themselves.
