A spontaneous encore to a life in theatre

Elijah Grier

For Elijah Grier, the stage has always been more than just a platform; it's a calling. Earning a degree in theatre with a concentration in musical theatre and a minor in dance from PennWest, Grier's journey is a testament to the power of following one's passion and embracing the unexpected twists that life offers.

Hailing from Philadelphia, Grier's decision to pursue theatre was, in his own words, "a spontaneous one."

Driven by the desire for a career that ignited his soul, he resolved never to settle for a path that wouldn't bring him professional fulfillment. This realization led him to the world of performing arts, where he discovered a profound passion that would shape his college experience and future aspirations.

During his time at PennWest, Grier immersed himself in the vibrant theatrical community. He became deeply involved with the "University Players," the theatre club, and the national theatre honors society, "Alpha Psi Omega." In the latter, he served diligently as treasurer and later as vice president, contributing his leadership and dedication to the organization.

“Coming to PennWest, I had no prior theatre knowledge or experience, but my peers were quick to help me in every aspect and encouraged me to hone my craft,” Grier said. “They taught me a lot about performing arts and myself. My peers acted as a great support system, and without them I don’t know if I would’ve made it to this point.”

As he steps off the graduation stage, Grier is already setting his sights on the future. His short-term goals include a summer dedicated to intensive personal study: delving deeper into music theory, honing his piano skills and nurturing his songwriting abilities. This dedication to continuous self-improvement underscores his commitment to his craft.

Looking further ahead, Elijah's long-term vision involves pursuing a master’s in musical theatre writing and production in the fall. This advanced degree will provide him with the tools and knowledge to excel in the field of musical theatre creation, a goal he is pursuing with characteristic determination.

“I believe I’ve gained enough practical experience in my field to confidently enter the theatre industry and sustain myself as a developing artist,” Grier said. “In addition to my professional development, I’ve gained valuable life skills through college that will benefit me in my everyday adult life.”

Among the many projects and experiences that shaped his education, Grier singles out his senior capstone project as particularly significant. This project provided him with the opportunity to compose a portfolio of original musical theatre songs and present them in an early-works workshop.

"My senior capstone project was one that stood out to me the most, as it gave me the opportunity to compose a portfolio of original musical theatre songs and present them in an early-works workshop," he said. "This gave me the chance to share my own creative works, while also learning the process of professionally developing new artistic material and collaborating on hosting a formal theatrical event."

For incoming college students, Elijah offers this advice:

"Be open to experiences, both in and, especially, out of the classroom. College is not just about academics; it's about life. Don't be afraid to go out, meet people, and explore. The more risks you take, the more unforgettable memories you'll make!"
