Maddison Ebner has always held a special place in her heart for animals, so pursuing a degree that involves caring for them is a natural fit. The Smithton, Pennsylvania, native will graduate Dec. 3 with a bachelor’s degree in veterinary technology.
“I have always had a deep love for animal welfare, as well as learning about their biology,” Ebner said. “I decided to complete a degree in this field to further my education and to be a part of their welfare.”
Her student experiences solidified that she had found a major and a career path that would allow her to make a difference.
“The project that stood out to me most was my research project. My project was based on hepatic lipidosis,” she said. “I further extended my project into creating a prescription diet food for another course.”
As a member and secretary of the Vet Med Club, Ebner was part of a rabies clinic that the club set up, which further enhanced her understanding of how her career functions in real-world situations.
After graduating, Ebner will complete certification through the Veterinary Technician National Exam. In the future, she plans to further her education and specialize in one area of veterinary care.
As she has navigated the rigors of college, she is grateful to the people who have taken the time to understand her questions and further her career. Her primary mentors are Jessica Shawley, vet tech program coordinator; Kelly Gustine, vet tech instructor; and Jessica Swords, DVM, associate professor in the program.
Just as her mentors have supported her and pushed her to succeed, she recommends that individuals starting college find a mentor who will be there to guide them.
