Destiny Kirby had many reasons for choosing PennWest Clarion for her education. Topping the list were Clarion’s reputation for excellent teacher preparation and a family precedent.
“My sister graduated from Clarion in 2004, and she heavily influenced my decision to attend PennWest Clarion,” Kirby said.
Kirby chose her major – early childhood education – because she has always enjoyed working with children.
“My first job was at a summer camp, as a camp counselor for children aged 5-12. I enjoyed it so much that I still work there today, but now as camp director,” she said.
There, Kirby discovered the joy she felt helping young learners explore, create and grow. Her PennWest education further fueled her dream of a career in teaching. At the Clarion campus, the Penn Hills native took part in meaningful experiences – both academic and extracurricular – that instilled her with confidence.
“Having the opportunity to be a student teacher has been a great experience that granted me a beautiful glimpse of my future. I learned and practiced useful teaching strategies and formed great relationships with students and teachers in Clarion,” Kirby said.
Involvement in student activities was an important part of her educational experience.
“I participated in the Clarion Fashion Show and the Divine Dolls Dance Team. I learned how to walk a runway and dance,” Kirby said. “These were incredible experiences that allowed me to gain a confidence that I didn't know I had.”
With her degree in hand, Kirby knows that she’s not only academically prepared for the future, but also personally prepared.
“I have become more resilient and independent throughout my experiences,” she said.
Following commencement, Kirby will focus on welcoming her first child in March. In the summer, she will return to the place that ignited her passion for education, qualified, confident and eager to take on more impactful roles.
“I will continue to be a summer camp director starting again in May, and I am exploring opportunities to become a director of a youth group at that same location,” Kirby said.
