Edinboro students produce sports-themed podcast series

Student-run podcast launched in January 2024

It doesn’t matter the topic – professional football, wrestling and hockey, sports media and culture and, of course, Edinboro Athletics.

If it’s about the wide world of sports, it’s a topic of conversation for the team of “Tailgate Talks” – a video podcast created by two Edinboro students that features a rotating cast of guests.

What started as a casual chat between Edinboro junior Mike Kozminski, digital media production major, and junior Alex Brown, sports management major, in October 2022 has turned into a popular YouTube series that was recently featured on ErieNewsNow, a local CBS affiliate in Erie, Pennsylvania.

“Sitting in front of a camera talking about the sports I love is a deep passion that I get to live much earlier in life than I thought I’d get to,” Brown said. “Edinboro has provided me with all the tools to do this. If I didn’t come here, I probably wouldn’t be in the spot to do this like I am right now.”

The two friends already spent their free time discussing the sports world. So it made sense for the pair to use their college experience to develop their skills.

“Sometimes I forget I’m even mic’d up and being recorded because Alex and I talk about sports 24/7, so what you see is what you get,” Kozminski said. “Edinboro has helped me get a level of confidence I’ve needed for years.”

The “Tailgate Talks” team records and produces one episode each week on Wednesday, through their YouTube channel and Instagram. Episodes include guest appearances from Edinboro athletes Matt Carlisle and Reed Martin (football) and Annie Weimer (soccer).

The current iteration of the podcast kicked off in January, with the co-hosts expanding their sports coverage beyond Edinboro Athletics. Prior to 2024, Kozminski and Brown were joined on air by Edinboro student Richie Armagost, who continues to serve as the show’s producer.

Additional support for the podcast is provided by Edinboro Joe Bachman, executive floor director; Haley Alexander, audio director; and Michael Kreinbucher, talent manager.
