About Me

Dr. Mario Majcen is a professor of atmospheric science at Pennsylvania Western University. He has taught on the California campus since 2009. His courses range from introductory meteorology to advanced weather analysis and forecasting, severe weather, and climate dynamics. His classes serve students pursuing careers in atmospheric science as well as those from other majors who want to understand the forces that shape weather and climate.

His research focuses on weather forecasting and on weather and climate risk management for businesses and supply chains. Extreme weather regularly disrupts agriculture, energy, transportation, and retail, and organizations increasingly need professionals who can interpret forecasts and plan for risk. His work prepares students for careers in both traditional meteorology and the growing fields where weather and business meet.

Since 2010, Dr. Majcen has led PennWest's storm-chasing field course, one of the university's most distinctive learning experiences. Each May, a small group of selected students spends two weeks traveling roughly 6,000 miles across the Great Plains. They apply classroom knowledge to forecast, track, and observe severe thunderstorms in real time. For many participants, the course is a highlight of their academic careers and a first step into professional meteorology.

A native of Croatia, Dr. Majcen earned a bachelor's degree in geosciences and meteorology from the University of Zagreb. He went on to earn a master's degree in meteorology from the University of Utah and a Ph.D. from The Pennsylvania State University. The mentors he had during his own education shaped his approach to teaching, and he is committed to giving his students the same close guidance and support.

Through rigorous coursework, hands-on field experience, and individual mentoring, Dr. Majcen prepares students to understand the atmosphere and put that knowledge to work in a changing world.
